Employee Spotlight: Sergeant Kevin Guenther

Why work in city government, specifically in Alexandria?

I did not start out working in government, but certain factors and influences guided me towards law enforcement at a later age in life.  I have to be honest, in my early years I thought it was really neat and cool to be a “cop”, but with age and experience I discovered the real reason.  I work for the Alexandria Police Department to help people and try to do the best work I can for them.  That is truly what brings me enjoyment and fulfillment in this career.  It fills my cup knowing that I can do positive things for others.  As far as why Alexandria?  I not only love this area, it is where I grew up, went through high school and much of my family still resides.  Oh, I also love the lakes on the week days; they are very peaceful.  Our community and the people who live here are proud of Alexandria, as am I.

Share a memory of a time you felt proud to be in local government.

I do not have just one.  I am proud of our office and knowing from the top down, the message of “people first” is a culture that over time has become our normal mission.  I am just proud to be a part of it. It’s not about me from day to day; it’s about those we help and can make a positive impact on, even if it’s only a smile.  I’m proud of that.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy spending time with family.  As I said earlier, my family is from Alexandria and I especially enjoy making memories at our bi-weekly “Friday family fun nights.”  Most times it is just getting together for food and visiting.  Life is short; we never know what is around the next corner, and I cherish those Friday’s.  I also enjoy deer hunting, fishing, lifting weights and at times, just sitting somewhere quiet and enjoying a good cold root beer.

Tell us about your family and yourself.

I am married and have two adult children.

What are your goals this year and for your department?

My goals are to continue growing, learning and finding ways to better help people.  Life is about learning, I have had humbling moments in this profession, and I am thankful for each one.  We have a great team at the police department filled with people who come each day and give it their best.  We are fortunate to have such a supportive community. My hope for our office would be to always give the best service possible; no matter how big or small the issue may seem.  It never hurts to be compassionate and caring for others, and it’s really easy to do if we try.

There are a lot of acronyms in government, explain ones that come behind your name or that you use in your work.

I have never been one to associate a title with who I am.  If learning and improving bring a title or letter, that’s low on my priority list, I’m still just a person like everyone else.  As far as familiar ones that I use or refer to at work, there are many.  BCA, FBI, MOCIC, NCMEC, APD, DCSO, DPS, and the list goes on.  They all refer to agencies and partners we work with.

Where is your favorite place to go to enjoy Alexandria?  (restaurants, parks, activities/exercising, etc.)

I love fishing on the lakes, mostly for the peacefulness and beauty of nature.  If fish are caught, that is just a bonus.  I enjoy working out at Snap Fitness here in town and eating at various restaurants; there are many.  I also enjoy going for walks and watching sunsets.  I feel blessed to have grown up in Alexandria and thankful for being able to live and work in this community.
